Radiation is a valuable tool used in some research at Auburn University. It is very safe if used properly and simple precautions are used. Risk Management and Safety has created a quick awareness video (see below) to help keep you safe if you’re in a lab where radioactive materials are being used. Even if you don’t actually work with radioactive materials yourself, it’s still good practice to be aware of radiation safety.
The Radiation Safety Program is responsible for assisting the Auburn University community in the safe use of ionizing radiation including radioactive materials (RAM) and x-rays. The program is designed to protect principal investigators, researchers, students, the general public, and the environment from exposure, and ensure the safe receipt, handling, use, and storage of RAM. The mission of this program is to facilitate safe conditions for utilizing radiation, maintain radiation exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA), and ensure operations are in compliance with applicable city, state, and federal regulations.
