Radiation is a valuable tool with several applications in research across Auburn University. When used properly with adequate and practical precautions, radiation can be a safe and effective resource for research. To support awareness and safe practices, Risk Management and Safety has created a brief awareness video (see aside) for individuals who may enter laboratories or spaces where radiation is used. Even for individuals that do not work directly with radioactive materials, it is an essential and good practice to be aware of radiation safety.
Radiation Safety
The Radiation Safety Program provides guidance and oversight to ensure the safe use of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation across the university.
The mission of the Radiation Safety Program is to facilitate safe radiation operations by maintaining radiation exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) and ensuring compliance with all applicable city, state, and federal regulations.
The program protects the university community from radiation hazards by promoting safe practices in the receipt, handling, use, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials.
Our services include conducting risk assessments, providing consultations, managing risk financing, handling claims, and providing risk management services to Auburn University's affiliated entities.

Auburn University Radiation Safety Committee
Auburn University’s Radiation Safety Committee is a standing committee responsible for the oversight of the University’s Radiation Safety Program. The Committee establishes policies and procedures, ensures compliance with applicable state and federal regulations, reviews applications and licenses for the use of ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, and confirms that individuals working with radioactive materials and radiation‑producing devices are properly trained and qualified to perform their work safely.
