Non-Conventional Vehicle Driver Requirements

BE AT LEAST 18 YEARS YEARS OLD

Since NCV driving is restricted to on-campus use only, drivers must be age 18 or older

HAVE VALID U.S. DRIVERS LICENSE

License must not be expired, suspended, revoked, or canceled

POSSESS A CURRENT MVR

Privileges determined in accordance with the Driver Qualification Policy.

COMPLETE NCV TRAINING

Non-Conventional Vehicle Training is available through ElevatED

Additional Requirements to Drive NCVs on Auburn’s Campus

NO CELL PHONES

in any capacity when operating the vehicle

INSPECT THE VEHICLE

Inspect daily prior to each use

WEAR SEATBELTS

Seat belts must be worn (if available)

OBEY TRAFFIC LAWS

Visit ALEA.gov for current information

NO HEADPHONES

Don’t wear any device that may restrict your ability to hear (including AirPods)

NO SMOKING OR VAPING

The number of seats determines the number of potential passengers

Never leave the key in the cart when storing or parking

Pedestrians always have the right of way on campus

Unless cart was designed for such use per manufacturer’s specifications

TYPES OF NON-CONVENTIONAL VEHICLES

GOLF CART (GOLF CAR)

Vehicle used to convey a person or persons and equipment at an average speed of less than 15 mph on a horizontally level surface

LOW-SPEED VEHICLE

Legal class of 4-wheel vehicles that have a maximum capable speed typically around 25 mph (40 km/h) and have a minimum capable speed (typically 20 mph or 32 km/h) that allows them to travel on public roads not accessible to all golf carts

ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLE

Also known as a quad, quad bike, four-wheeler or quadricycle is a vehicle that travels on low-pressure tires, with a seat that is straddled by the operator, along with handlebars for steering control

UTILITY VEHICLE

Small 2- to 6-person four-wheel drive off-road vehicle, also called UTV (utility and transportation vehicle), a ROV (recreational off-highway vehicle), or a MOHUV (multipurpose off-highway utility vehicle). Additional examples include Mules and Gators

CHARGING AND REFUELING

Always follow manufacturer’s directions when charging or refueling a non-conventional vehicle and always turn off cart and remove key from ignition before charging or refueling
  • Do not use extension cords or damaged cables
  • Only use grounded exterior receptacles or charging stations
  • Do not charge overnight
  • Do not jump-start another vehicle from a cart
  • Turn off cart and let engine cool before fueling
  • Only refuel outdoors
  • Do not overfill tank
  • Store gas in approved containers

MAINTAIN

Departments are responsible for maintaining a list of their NCVs Each and a list of persons authorized and trained to operate NCVs

REGISTER

NCVs must be registered through AU Parking Services.

DISPLAY

NCVs should be marked with clearly visible registration decals.

PARK

Never park within 20 feet of entrances/exits of buildings (except at
loading docks or approved parking spots.)

Do not block entrances, stairways, fire exits, fire hydrants, disability
ramps or main thoroughfares.

SECURE

Be sure the parking brake is applied BEFORE exiting.

REMOVE THE KEY and return to the proper contact person.

Store the vehicle in a secure location and consider using a chain/padlock.

Accidents and Thefts should be reported multiple ways to keep all parties informed and involved

STANDARD 500

49CFR Part 571.500 or “Standard 500” requires NCVs to be equipped with specific features.

THE PURCHASE OF USED, REMANUFACTURED,
OR NON-STANDARD 500 NCVS IS DISCOURAGED

  • Rear stoplights/tail lamps
  • Reflectors/reflective tape
    • Must have 360° visibility

A certification label indicating the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) does not exceed 3,000 lbs (1.361 kg.)

  • No fewer than 4 wheels touching the ground always.
  • All original equipment in good working order.

  • Horn within reach of driver.
  • Ignition/on-off key to prevent unauthorized use.
  • Parking brake with enough strength to hold vehicle at least at 15° angle.
  • Audible back up alarm.
A slow moving vehicle sign is required for currently owned NCVs that do not meet the “Standard 500” requirements.
This reflective triangle must be clearly visible from the rear to other traffic.

How do I take the Driver Training?

CR513E Auburn University Driver Training is available on ElevatED, Auburn’s Employee Education Center.

On June 4, 2024, all current Auburn University employees were auto-enrolled into the course. Going forward, all new hires will be assigned the training as part of their on-boarding.

Do all University employees have to take Driver Training?

I have already taken driver training? Do I have to re-take it?

I don't drive a University vehicle. Why do I have to take driver training?

Even if you don’t drive a University vehicle, you may still operate an automobile while you performing activities “on behalf of Auburn University and/or within the scope of duties assigned by Auburn University”.

For example, taking your personal vehicle across campus to go from one meeting to another, or taking your personal vehicle to a conference or event.

Due to this possibility and to eliminate any gaps in protection, all Auburn University employees must complete CR513E Auburn University Driver Training. 

I only drive a golf cart for work. Do I have to take the driver training?

How do I take training for 12-and-15 Passenger Vans?

I don't have a Banner ID, but I'm being told I need to take training. How do I do that?

How do I get credit for training in BioRAFT?

Risk Management & Safety is in the process of integrating course credit for CR513E Auburn University Driver Training into BioRAFT.

At this time, Please email aurms@auburn.edu if you need course completion reflected in BioRAFT.

When do I have to take driver training?

If you were auto-enrolled at that time, please complete CR513E Auburn University Driver Training as soon as possible.

Drivers involved in any automobile accident while on University business must repeat the driver training program within 30 days of the accident. All drivers should repeat training every three years.
